Profile: Charlie Wolf: To his fans, Charlie is a broadcasting legend. Originally nicknamed 'The Sea Wolf', he was one of the superstars of 1980's offshore giant, LASER 558, which broadcasted from the MV Communicator, anchored near Knock Deep in the international waters of the North Sea.
It is believed that Charlie made a return to the United States after Laser finally came off the air in the mid 80s, and could arguably have disappeared into broadcasting oblivion. Returning to radio in the UK was only really possible after the Laser era had had time to pass, and Charlie most noticeably came back to the fore on GWR, where, reports suggest, he sounded bored out of his mind.
Also, over more recent years, Charlie Wolf has worked on Atlantic 252 and was then at UK AM talk station, TalkSPORT. On 31st December 2001, Charlie moved to Cork's new station Red FM, in Ireland to host a brand new late night phone-in programme, 'Cork Talks Back' from 10pm to 1am Sunday to Thursday. He was recruited by Red FM's Chief Executive and Programme Director, Henry Owens. The two worked together on Atlantic 252. (Red-FM launched on January 16th 2001 from studios at the University Technology Business Park in Bishopstown, Cork, broadcasting on 104 to 106 FM)
On his appointment, Charlie said: "I'm sure some listener's will be dancing in the streets,
Charlie, now that the scourge of the left, defender of freedom and fox-hunting,
and one of TalkSPORT's most outspoken hosts is leaving. I can assure you my
parting is amicable. I will very much miss working at Talk and the people there,
especially my boss, Bill Ridley and Tommy Boyd whose shows I have followed.
The challenge, though, to devise and launch a brand
new prime time programme on a new radio station is just too good to pass up.
Cork has never had a radio station like Red and there has never been a late
night phone in - Cork has been crying out for this."
Whereabouts: Stuart Keeling reported in January 2003: 'Mr. Wolf has now returned to TalkSport at the weekends: Fridays: 1am-5am, Saturdays/Sundays: 2am-5am'
