BBC LOCAL RADIO:

BBC RADIO CARLISLE / BBC RADIO CUMBRIA: The first BBC local radio service for Cumbria, was a little more focused on launch, by name anyway.  BBC Radio Carlisle launched on 24th November 1973.  It stayed under the same name until almost it's tenth birthday when it changed to BBC Radio Cumbria to reflect a wider reaching audience spread around 80 miles of coastline, around half a million residents spread over 2,500 square miles of land.  It's actual broadcast area can be defined as reaching from the Morecambe Bay to the Solway Firth penned in by the Irish Sea and the imposing Pennine Mountain Range.  Most of the population is centred around the heart of the area, areas of the Lake District including Barrow in Furnes, Ulverston and Kendal and the place that gave the station's it's original name - Carlisle - an English town, situated just ten miles from the Scottish border.  The station has offices in Whitehaven, Kendal and Barrow, plus satellite studios in Ambleside and Keswick.  Locally originated programming is aired from 5am to 7pm weekdays and 6am to 6pm weekends, with regional or national BBC sustaining services at other times.  The station refers to the fact that around one in three people in the county listen to the station each week, or to refer to the 'half a million' mentioned above, almost 100,000 people.  BBC Radio Cumbria broadcasts on FM 95.6 (North, East and West), 96.1 (South), 104.1 (Whitehaven and Keswick), 95.2 (Kendal) and 104.2 for Windermere, and on AM 756 (North), 837 (South) and 1458 (West).

BBC RADIO FURNESS (opt out of BBC Radio Cumbria): The Furness area got it's own localised opt-out service from 25th May 1982 on 96.1FM & 837AM.  The service came from Hartingdon Street in Barrow-In-Furness and served South Cumbria with programming which initially lasted for around one-and-a-half hours, but over time, this expanded to four hours, with the Radio Cumbria service at other times.  Cutbacks imposed by London hit stations across the country, and Radio Furness was gone by 1991 when the frequency became another for Radio Cumbria.

COMMERCIAL:  LOCAL (ILR)

CFM (Carlisle) is personality radio with hits & oldies, news & information for Carlisle - broadcasting on 96.4 & 102.5FM - transmissions commenced at 8:00am, 14th April 1993 under it's current licence with John Myers at the controls playing Tina Turner's 'The Best'.  Close to but not quite in Scotland, it is nevertheless currently owned by Scottish Radio Holdings (SRH) following it's purchase from Carlisle Radio Limited 30th July 2001.  It was formerly also partially owned by Border Television until it's Radio division was sold off.  It is reported to be the only ILR contractor in the county with bleed over from West Sound and Red Rose.  It is a smaller scale station, not a full ILR, but more incremental - one of a chain provided to fill small gaps in the main contractors coverage of the UK.  Roughly centred on Carlisle, the outreaches hit South West Scotland and therefore into West Sound's territory.  Coverage for CFM reaches outer lying areas of Whitehaven & Windermere.

CFM (West Cumbria) is personality radio with hits & oldies, news & information for West Cumbria - broadcasting on 102.2 & 103.4FM - transmissions commenced 30th September 1995 under it's current licence - close to but not quite in Scotland, it is nevertheless currently owned by Scottish Radio Holdings (SRH) following it's purchase from Carlisle Radio Limited 30th July 2001.  When a micro-licence for an area referred-to by the Radio Authority as 'West Cumbria' came up, there was but one applicant.

CFM also have a split transmission system which accomodates different breakfast shows for the east and west of Cumbria. Advertisers can also use this system to target specific parts of the CFM transmission area.

LAKELAND RADIO: Providing the most popular music of the last forty years, together with information including local features & comment, local & national news & sport for Kendal and Windermere, this new community-based service began broadcasting on 27th October 2001 from it's studios at Lakeland Food Park in Kendal.  It operates for the 25-54 age group on two frequencies to ensure adequate coverage: 100.1 (Kendal) & 100.8 (Windermere).  AIRCHECK records show this station, as being controlled by it's largest shareholder, the CN Group, licenced under it's application name Westmoreland Radio Ltd (Mint FM).  The station's airtime is sold by Fusion Radio Sales.

They were one of two applicants who had applied to the Radio Authority for the licence (advertised in June 2000) by the closing date of 3rd October 2000.  The bid beat off the 2nd application from Lakes FM which was submitted by Carlisle Radio Ltd, or CFM. (see above).

In October 2000, prior to the award of the licence, the Radio Authority conducted a public interest test to assess whether there would be any objections if the licence was awarded to the station.  This was because of CN Group's control of neighbouring Morecambe station 96.9 The Bay.  Broadcasting law states that a company cannot own two overlapping FM licences unless the RA deemed that it would not be against the public interest - in such scenarios, in considering the matter, the RA must assess whether an award would lead to a reduction in the plurality of ownership in the local radio sector, whether there would be an effect on the range of available programmes in the area, whether there would be less diversity in the sources of information locally, and in the sources of opinions expressed on-air locally.     There being no adverse effects envisaged, Mint FM subsequently won the licence.
